Herman James was born and raised in Portland, Oregon but for a number of years has lived and worked in a forested setting near the southern edge of Boston. Now the northwest is calling him back and he is moving to a home on the Olympic Peninsula where he camped with his parents when he was young. As a result of living near and camping in the these lush outdoor settings, he developed an abiding love for nature, which is strongly visible in much of his work. James is an artist whose work is firmly positioned in New Contemporary painting and drawing. He believes the often “over-the-top” yet deeply intuitive art making of this alternate movement owes no allegiance to the schools and aesthetic positions of the mainstream. He hopes his work communicates the heart and spirit found in the New Contemporary art movement.
